Everything You Wanted to Know about Purifying Methods Using UV-C & Ozone
Is it unhealthy to work in a kitchen where there is air purification equipment installed using a UV-C/ozone-based system?
The appliance is always installed such that the air is drawn out by the exhaust air system. In this case, ozone is prevented from entering the area, particularly in the kitchen.
This requires the following precautions during installation:
The UV-C/ozone-based device is connected to the exhaust air system, so it only runs when the exhaust air system is in operation.
Installing the pressure gauge: This prevents the UV-C/ozone device from continuing to run when the pressure drop - caused by such things as a fan failure - continues (this measure is already known in large kitchens because of gas operation).
How can ozone remove grease from the exhaust air system?
Ozone is an active form of oxygen. This means that UV radiation activates and divides oxygen molecules (O) to form O1, which binds to O2. O3 is then formed.
This method is extremely reactive and reacts to all substances found in the air; that is to say, to fat and oil particles, which are oxidized. This process is called photocatalysis.
What remains in the air after the fat has been removed by the action of the ozone?
After complete oxidation, the final products mainly consist of CO2, together with water and the minimum amount of polymeric fat, which leave the exhaust air in the form of dust (similar to exhalation).
Is the resulting air form dangerous to the environment when using the UV-C & ozone air purification method?
After the oxidation process there are no harmful residues that would be hazardous to the environment. Polymeric fat is 100% biodegradable.
How does ozone produced by the UV system differ from “dangerous” ozone/ozone smog?
There are two types of ozone production:
Ozone generated by an electrical charge; such as during storms, welding, printing, copying, or in ozone generators: in this process, nitrogen oxides are formed due to high energy, which in connection with ozone are not completely trouble free. This is mainly the case in road transport where there is a large concentration of exhaust gas. Nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide form ozone when exposed to sunlight. Here we are talking about ozone smog. On closer examination, it is the total amount of harmful substances contained in "ozone smog" that cause the problems. Ozone continuously degrades harmful substances - without ozone, the load on the environment would be much greater.
Ozone produced by UV radiation such as sunlight or UV-based cleaning system: a lack of energy means that nitrogen oxides cannot be produced. This method of ozone production is mainly found at an altitude of 25,000-30,000 metres in the form of an ozone layer that protects us from harmful UV radiation.
Ozone is a natural cleansing element. Ozone is associated with all the substances that are in the air. Viruses, bacteria and spores (mold spores) are destroyed by ozone.
The half-life of ozone is about 20-30 minutes.
The ozone odor threshold/limit value is 0.02 ppm.
The MAK value (Maximum Concentrations at the Workplace) (8 working hours/day, 40 hours/week) is, on average, 0.1 ppm (may be higher in the short term)
The threshold/limit value for human safety is 0.5 ppm (see also “Ozone, Invisible Physician” by Paula Horan).
From about 1.0 ppm, ozone is harmful to human lungs (see also “Ozone Haze, Ozone Smog: Basics of Ozone Chemistry”, Ernst-Peter Röth).
What happens when too much ozone is produced in the exhaust air system?
Once ozone reacts with all the substances in the air, it is not possible to overproduce. Because of harmful substances in the air, ozone decomposes immediately or re-forms as oxygen, O2.
Why are UV lamps and not ozone generators used our systems?
Ozone production using UV light produces pure ozone without harmful secondary substances. The UV light allows the oxidation process to accelerate.
If ozone is produced through high-voltage generators with atmospheric oxygen, oxygen binds with nitrogen. This means that a high concentration of nitrogen oxides (Nox) is produced, which could be a problem for the environment. Nitrogen oxides, in conjunction with ozone degrade very slowly. In order to keep only the production of pure ozone in this process, pure oxygen should be used (as with oxygen therapy).
